| Urban Sprawl's "School of Beauté:" Making Cherry Grove More Attractive |

It was a sunny and cool afternoon on Saturday, May 24, when Urban Sprawl's School of Beauté opened its doors at the Cherry Grove Community House, under the aegis of the Arts Project of Cherry Grove. On hand were many of the jewels in the crown of Cherry Grove Drag Royalty, as well as a handful of aspiring queens. Scheduled for the eve of the annual Homecoming Celebration, the timing, the students and the instruction were the best of the best.
Urban provided tips on shopping, relative merits of different cosmetic products, and the virtue of powders versus creams. She began by demonstrating a beautiful glamour presentation on none other than Sylvia Shapiro! Urban says Sylvia provided her original inspiration for joining the pantheon of Queens in the Grove, and it was wonderful to see the subtle changes that make a handsome man into a beautiful woman.
Next, Urban selected a member of the aspiring royalty to whom to give an over-the-top look, very Folies Bergère. The sparkling result capitalized on the high cheekbones and beautiful eyes of the princess who would be known, a mere 24 hours later, as "Krystal". The shimmer of glitter, highlighting eye shadow, and crease, and accentuating Cupid's bow lips made a most dramatic splash with those assembled.
Finally, the glories of the tragic face were shown. Certainly in the hands of an artist like Urban, a swift transformation is possible, but the intricacies of the fun "tragic" face were demonstrated on drag ingénue, Ruby. While this look is very different from the one Ruby would wear Sunday evening, many possibilities were apparent in the crookedly limned lips and the almost Lone-Ranger-mask-like eye shadow that was combination Kabuki, science fiction and haute couture, all at the same time.
The mysteries of proper application of everything from eyelashes and nails to special foundation techniques provided a true education for the newbies, as well as the experienced Queens, who came to support Urban and the Arts Project. The event was so successful that rumor has it that a Drag King offering is in the works. For more information, contact the Arts Project or one of the Board members that you meet on the walk.
