On March 2, at East of Eighth restaurant in Chelsea, the Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) held its In-Town Party, the annual pre-Fire Island season reunion of its membership, and announced a preliminary calendar of events, at the Grove Community House, for the coming summer. A fair number of members were in attendance.
Grovites enjoyed a brunch of Eggs Benedict or Florentine, French Toast with Oranges and Passion Fruit Syrup, Farmers' Omelet, Chicken or Shrimp on Caesar Salad, Hamburger, or Grilled Chicken Wrap, assorted muffins, miniature pastries, and cocktails. A 50-50 raffle was held and Dr. Jerry Stagg won the prize.
On the afternoon of May 24, at "Transitions," Urban Sprawl hosts a 'School of Beauté,' offering make-up tips and, the following day, APCG holds an afternoon volunteers' reception and sign-up, and decorating party for the evening's Membership Party and Homecoming Queen Contest. Yoga sessions, which take place on most Tuesdays and Saturdays, begin on May 20.
A Community Flea Market is scheduled for June 7 and a membership meeting, for the 8th. Isaac Steven Vaughan organizes the 10th annual edition of Ocean Aires, billed as "Rated 'X': Classical Concert & Lingerie Party," with Philomena as Mistress of Ceremonies, on June 14. On June 21 and 28, John DeMarco directs "I Love New York," a musical revue, which, John informs us, will involve "songs and themes written about New York from the turn of the [20th] century until [the] present time[, including] all of the dance crazes" and assures us, "It will be a hoot." Sunday afternoon Line Dancing lessons and evening Bingo games, with such themes as "wild hat & wig," "flamingo," "surprise party," "Christmas in July," "wear your uniform," and "aloha," begin on June 15.
Comic Michele Balan puts on a show on July 5. The annual Doctor's Fund Benefit show, directed by Donald Labohn, is on July 12. Casino, the biggest fundraiser of APCG's season, is on July 19 and 20, and the Art & Artisan show is on the 26th and 27th.
Harold Seeley's Cherry Grove Archive Show is on August 2 and 3, during the day, and on the evening of the 2nd, our favorite veteran diva offers a show entitled, "Rose Levine Live!" A guest duo puts on a show with the title "The Parodivas are FIRED," on August 9 and, on the 16th, our favorite Gallic travesti pianist stars in "Liberté, Égalité, Jacqueline Jonée in Concert."
A Fire Island Photography Show & Sale is slated for September 6. The Pines Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) celebrates its 15th birthday with a party on September 13. And, as the climax of summer 2008, the annual APCG gala end of season ball will take place on September 27.
