Margo & Festive Wedding Party Lead 33rd Invasion of the Pines

Pines Polygamists

On the Fourth of July, 2008, Cherry Grove Homecoming Queen Margo, as a lovely bride, whose entourage, most pertinently, represented her wedding party, led a successful 33rd annual Invasion of the Pines, as organized by past Homecoming Queen and Empress of New York Panzi Hansen. The Invasion commemorates the time, in 1976, when late Pines entrepreneur John Whyte refused service to a Grove patron in drag, the late Teri Warren, and the slight was avenged by Panzi, Rose Levine, Amelia Migliaccio, Lyn Hutton and a party of others, who were not turned away and declared victory.

Invaders' concepts and costuming represented no end of creativity and these efforts were duly rewarded. A group of American First Ladies-including Porsche, in a pillbox hat, as Jacqueline Kennedy, Ariel Sinclair as a very convincing Hillary Clinton, JB as Mary Todd Lincoln, trying to sell her theater tickets to that fateful performance of "Our American Cousin," Tommy Kirby as a tipsy Mamie Eisenhower, Gusty Winds as a toothy Eleanor Roosevelt, and Invasion virgin Tiffany Taylor as Dolly Madison, and optimistically looking ahead to First Lady Michelle Obama-was presented with a "Best in Show" ribbon by Ron Martin, President of FIPPOA (the Fire Island Pines Property Owners Association). The colorful and bare-as-they-dared House of Orange contingent, including Steven Menendez and Dirty Martini, was pronounced "Best Group." A quartet of 'Amy Winos' was named "Most Comical"-Empress Anne Tique contributed her own Amy Winehouse to the festivities. And a bevy of damsels in hoopskirts, calling themselves the 'Belvedere Belles," won FIPPOA's "Most Beautiful" ribbon.

A dazzling figure in an elaborate feather costume, calling herself Tormenta, won the Pines Pavilion's "first annual Miss Invasion Contest"-a tiara, a sash, and $500 cash-and proved to be Mr. Fire Island Leather 2007 Diego Vargas. Mr. FI Leather 2004 Jeff Goodman and his household came as mosquitoes and 'Citronella.' Mr. FI Leather 2008 Isaac Steven Vaughan was in evidence as well.

A group, modesty garbed in blue, wore stickers that said, "I'm a Pines Polygamist," and claimed they were looking for new husbands. Our own statuesque Carmen Miranda figure wore red, white and blue this year and called herself "Carmen America or Auntie Sam." Portland, Oregon Empress Lovely Suzanne, an RG and an Invasion virgin, was there. Photographer Devon Cass came as Cher, accompanied by Richard De Fonzo as Liza Minnelli. Fire Island News' Mike Lavers came disguised as Ciara Borealis. Reigning Miss Fire Island, Stephanie Stone, was there, as was Miss FI 2004 Dakota Sue. World Famous BOB, the female female impersonator, fed observers cake when she disembarked from the Invasion ferry.

Past Homecoming Queens Coco Love, Lola Galore, Charity, Donna Piranha, and Cobra were part of Queen Margo's entourage, as were Urban Sprawl and Jack, Bobbie Green and Doreen Rallo. Recent Empresses of New York Demi-Tasse and Robin Kradles were among the Invaders.

Susan and Ruth Freedner, Phil C. "Philomena" Stoehr, Michael Abdis and Sherri Rase sold tickets for the ferry, from the Grove to the Pines, to the hundreds of Invaders. Matt Baney, Norman Cherubino, and this writer assisted Panzi with security on the boat.
