The new season of Ariel Sinclair's Kamikaze Kabaret stand-up comedy shows, on Thursday nights at the Ice Palace, is in full swing and I caught up with the June 19 edition, in which headliners were outrageous comic singers Wendy Ho and Leibya Rogers (Mindy Raf). Brad Loekle is Ariel's sidekick and DJ Chuck is on sound.
Following Ariel's country/western number about what she likes in a man and Brad's story about his encounter with Star Jones and how she got him fired from a job, Wendy Ho regaled us with a pointed rap, taking aim at closeted celebrities and pulling no punches about naming names. Her earthy selections found her urging "Please don't fuck me in the ass tonight," to the tune of "On the Disco Line," and "(You can) Fuck Me (when you can)," to the melody of "Get Here."
Leibya Rogers, an earnest "singer, songwriter, poet and vegan activist," armed with a sense of humor and a guitar, sang us her 'signature song' "Leibya Spells Freedom;" serenaded a woman she fell for while picketing a Starbucks with "Katie Holmes, You Should Be Leibya's Girlfriend" ("you need a little Leibya"); and shared a torch song, "I Can't Believe I Douched for You."
Our hosts conducted a "Work Your Bra" contest, with Dan, Brian, Michael John and Joseph competing, to strains of "The Stripper," for most seductive. Joseph, who brought Lois Fisher, as a dance partner, into his act, was the winner. There was also a "Joke Off" contest, which Lois handily won with a jest knocking George W. Bush.
