On August 16, poolside at the Grove Hotel, Dame Edith Piro hosted the "Strut Your Mutt" contest, for dogs and their owners, benefiting PAWS, the animal rescue organization, tirelessly led by Valerie Perez, in Cherry Grove, and Lee Frey, in Fire Island Pines. Of the "baker's dozen," as Dame Edith put it, of contestants, three pairs won the four prizes that were awarded. Meryl Facterman and Martha Lorenzo were among the judges.
Accompanied by owner Sofina, Wolfgang, a dachshund named for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and wearing a tuxedo, won both the 'best in show' and 'most popular' blue ribbons, the latter for raising $338 in audience tips for PAWS. Penny, a collie-pit bull mix and a rescue, wearing a cape, and Jaime, in tuxedo collar and bare chest, took the 'best costume' lavender ribbon, and Yorkie Inchy and owner Bud were awarded the 'best couple' rainbow ribbon. Vincent, winner of $170 in PAWS' 50-50 raffle, donated $60 of his prize back to the organization.
Dame Edith, in pink hair and harlequin glasses, began the afternoon with "Sing a Song" and "Make Your Own Kind of Music" and closed it with a medley of theme songs from television's "Laverne and Shirley," "Golden Girls," "The Jeffersons," and so on. Contestants strutted their mutts to strains of "Who let the dogs out?" and "They called it puppy love."
