On July 5, Cherry Grove resumed having a more-or-less full-scale Independence Day, mostly cross-dressing Invasion of the Pines, following last year’s, when it was scaled down to just 20 individuals, and it was, once again, as festive as it can be. This 45th anniversary Invasion was led by its founder, Thom “Panzi” Hansen, Homecoming Queen 1976 and 1977, and new Homecoming Queen Davida Jones.
The theme of Davida’ Invasion was the colors of the original, eight-hue rainbow flag, and backed by a colorful banner that read, “Miss Davida Jones in Living Color Homecoming Queen 2021,” her entourage was dressed to represent this palette, and included the likes of Lorraine Michels, Dale Lally, Lianna, Joyce Rodgers, Amy Beth, Mica, Dirty Martini, Chola, recent past Miss Fire Island Champagne Bubbles, past New York Emperor Wendy Pinkhouse, past Emperor and Homecoming Queen 2020 Ikea, Homecoming Queen 2018 Rose Levine, Nickie, and bearing the banner, Excelsior MC Leathermen Bruce Michael II, reigning Mr. Fire Island Leather, and Mike Desanto.
There was an Imperial Court of New York contingent, led by reigning Empress Sugar B. Real, supported by Dale and Jen, and Sue Panzer, Angela Smith, Keith, Dawn, Annie, and friends, dressed as cows, their answer to Herd Immunity.
In the Pines, Robin Byrd, Shequida, and members of the Fire Island Pines Property Owners Association met us at the pier, and Davida’s number, when she and her entourage emerged from the Invasion ferry, was “Fabulous,” complete with splits.
