Singer Marisa Corvo (“American Idol,” “The Voice,” “Stonewall Sensation”) returned to Cherry Grove, after several seasons’ absence, for a solo show at the Ice Palace on July 25. DJ Chuck McTague assisted.
Her voice fresh and supple, even, and resonant, over a wide range, Corvo treated us to more than a dozen songs, ranging from classic Broadway and classic disco to some rap and tributes to Lady Gaga, Donna Summer, Cher, and Whitney Houston.
She began with “MacArthur Park” (Summer) and “Never Really Over” (Katy Perry), then on to a moving “Somewhere,” from Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Arthur Laurents’ “West Side Story,” her “American Idol” audition song. “Perfect,” which she sang on “The Voice,” includes a rap section, and here, she introduced her little nephew Grayson. “Shallow” was her first Lady Gaga song and, later, she sang her girlfriend Kelly’s favorite song, “(I’ll) Always Remember (Us this Way),” both from “A Star Is Born.” Corvo called Celine Dion’s “I Surrender” her “claim to fame,” attracting many fans.
“Hot Stuff” brought Corvo back to Donna Summer and disco. “American Boy” was another song, beside “Perfect,” that included some rap. Corvo gave us a strong “Fight Song” and she returned to Katy Perry with “Daisies.” With Cher’s “Turn Back Time,” the singer shared with us a song that she didn’t get to sing on “The Voice”—their loss—and Heart’s “Alone” followed.
After singing “Happy Birthday” to audience member Amy, Corvo gave us an emotional “I Have Nothing” (Houston), cathartic for all of us. Her encore, “You’ll Change the World,” brought the crowd to its feet to dance.
