On August 8, at Sand Castle, Susan Campanaro, also known to many of us as Lavinia Draper, returned to Cherry Grove for her first full show since before the pandemic, and was assisted by composer-pianist-and-singer Lynn Portas, at the keyboard, and 50 favorite melodies, in three hours, were on their agenda.
They saluted James Taylor with “Sweet Baby James,” the Eagles with “Desperado,” and Elton John with “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” Divas’ songs featured included Donna Summer’s “On the Radio,” “MacArthur Park,” and “Last Dance,” which brought dancers to the floor; Bette Midler with the early “Do You Want to Dance;” Lady Gaga with “Edge of Glory;” Madonna with “Borderline” and “Vogue;” and Joni Mitchell with “Big Yellow Taxi.”
Among the highlights were Susan and Lynn’s performances of two of Lynn’s own works, “The Lavinia Draper Song,” about Susan’s alter ego, and “This One’s for the Band.” They celebrated local singers by inviting Sue King to the microphone to do “Maggie May,” Kay Davis for “Misty,” Mike Schaefer with “Summer Wind” and “Since I Fell for You,” and this writer offering “L-O-V-E” and “Moon River.”
Catch Susan and Lynn at Sand Castle on August 22 at 5 p.m.
