Kicking off Juneteenth Weekend, on June 18, at the Cherry Grove Community House, British comedian, of Nigerian descent, Regina Obedapo “Gina” Iyashere, AKA Gina Yashere, of CBS-TV’s “Bob Hearts Abishola” fame, performed her comedy as a benefit for the Okra Project, presented by the Arts Project of Cherry Grove.
The Okra Project’s (https://www.theokraproject.com/) mission statement is as follows: “The Okra Project is a collective that seeks to address the global crisis faced by Black Trans people by bringing home cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources to Black Trans People wherever we can reach them.” Yashere's performance raised $4,915 for the Okra Project.
On June 19, Juneteenth itself, the Black and Brown Equity Coalition (BaBEC) held a Beach Solidarity March, made up of Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove contingents, and a Progress Pride Parade, culminating in a Flag Ceremony at the Grove dock.
