Isaac Steven , former manager of the Grove Hotel and creator of the Mr. Fire Island Leather contest there, bested three other contenders for the title of Mr. FI Leather 2008, at the eighth annual Mr. FI Leather contest, at the hotel's Ice Palace, on May 17. As treasurer for New York City's Excelsior Motorcycle Club, Isaac made his return to the Island, that weekend, for Excelsior's 33rd anniversary Lust for Life leather run, billed as "Jock Strapped," held this year at clothing optional Belvedere, a new venue for the club. Isaac is also associated with Heritage of Pride, which organizes New York City's annual LGBT Pride March. The President of Excelsior MC is Gabriel Rivas.

In the contest, hosted by entertainer Ariel Sinclair and Mr. FI Leather 2006 and Gay Male S& M Activists Board Member Master Tom, Isaac impressed the judges with his Meat Rack fantasy, in which, stripped to leather jock and harness, he played Ravel's "Bolero" on his accordion, while slaves licked his boots and oiled him, former New York Empress Gefil Tefish fed him grapes, Dowager Emperor Craig Hollywood fanned him, and the hotel's Manager Ramón Peña-Sierra and Bar Manager John Doyle plied him with drink and dildo respectively, all to Isaac and company's insistently repeated refrain, "It's a fantasy!" As audience favorite, Isaac also claimed the runner-up title of Mr. Meat Rack.

The other contestants were Master CJ, realtor and publisher, and the hotel's Frank Spoto and Jerry. For Master CJ's fantasy scene, he picked unsuspecting Edgar, who is also Grove Homecoming Queen Lola, out of the audience, threw him over his shoulder, carried him to the stage, stripped off his shirt, and humped him.

The judges were custom leatherwear designer David Samuel Menkes, who makes the winners' sashes and vests; Mr. Long Island Leather 2003 Frank Burdi; and Messrs. FI Leather 2007 Diego Vargas, stepping down that night, 2005 Joe Saporito, and 2001 (the first-ever), this writer, Joe's domestic partner. Contestants were judged on image, stage presence, interview, Meat Rack fantasy, and preparation.

Slaves for auction

Ariel, aptly and elegantly attired in black, kicked off the proceedings by delivering a raunchy parody of the song "Get Here," with hotel General Manager Sal Piro on sound. To open the second half of the evening, yours truly sang "This Nearly Was Mine," from "South Pacific." Jason Cozmo, as Liza Minnelli, made a cameo appearance.

During the evening, former President of Excelsior Victor Skolnik announced that the previous night's benefit Master and Slave Auction, also at the Ice Palace, had raised $500, which Excelsior was donating to the Cherry Grove Fire Department. At that event, hosted by singer Porsche and John Doyle, Vinnie, Norman, Mr. FI Leather 2007 Diego, TJ, Wayne, Richard and Rick were auctioned off as slaves, with Diego bringing in the top price of $1,000 in "Daddy Dollars" (worth $100) and Norman bringing in the second highest bid of $600 in this currency. Messrs. FI Leather 2004 East Village Stud Jeff Goodman and 2006 Master Tom sold, as a team of tops, for $600 and, finally, John Doyle sold for $500.
