SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders, founded as Senior Action in a Gay Environment), now 30 years old, held its third annual Cherry Grove Celebration at the home of Jack Dowling, on July 26, and honored longtime Grovites Jan Felshin and Edrie Ferdun, recently married in California on their 49th anniversary, and attorney Jim Fallon, who, decades ago, defended gay men who were arrested on Fire Island and booked on Long Island.
SAGE Executive Director Michael Adams presented the organization's awards, as well as official New York State Assembly citations, sent by Assembly Member Ginny Fields to each honoree "for being an inspiration to others."
Edrie saluted SAGE for conceiving of and executing the "fabulous idea of tending our elders with love" and jokingly characterized Jan and herself as "the poster children of love and marriage," to which Jan added, "and longevity."
Michael paid tribute to Jim as "an extraordinary friend of the community ... especially years ago, when we didn't have many friends," and said that the barrister well represented "the spirit of SAGE." The Executive Director also announced SAGE's recent inauguration of a cyber center, with teachers giving seniors computer training, and its collaborations with the Calamus Foundation, which is making a matching grant to SAGE, and AARP, which will be a major sponsor of SAGE's conference in October.
