A gripping thriller and a gothic short, both involving possession and blood, were on the bill at the Fire Island Film & Video Festival, under the auspices of the Arts Project of Cherry Grove and the Long Island Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, at the Community House on August 21. The full-length feature was "You Belong to Me" (USA, 2007, 82 minutes), by Cherry Grove's own Sam Zalutsky, who was present, and the short was "In Twilight's Shadow" (USA, 2008, 12 minutes), by TM Scorzafava, and Wolfe Video sponsored the evening.
In "You Belong to Me"-significantly a Mama's Boy LLC production, in association with Offhollywood Pictures-Brooklyn landlady Gladys, played by Patti D'Arbanville, veteran of Andy Warhol films and "The Sopranos," becomes obsessively involved with her new, gay architect tenant, Jeffrey-Daniel Sauli-and attempts to infantilize and control him as she strives to recapture a family atmosphere, however off-kilter.
Mysterious occurrences, odd coincidences, strange sounds, and hints at a louche past in Gladys' house are the film's concerns. Other important characters include Stewart, Gladys' Igor-like minion; Nikki, Jeffrey's former housemate; René, once Jeffrey's trick and now his neighbor; and Michael, who comes in search of another Geoff, who lived in Jeffrey's apartment, but appears to have departed in haste, without his belongings. Sherman Howard, Heather Alicia Simms, Duane Boutté and Julien Lucas are among the other cast members. The Grove's David Boyer, author of "Kings & Queens: Queers at the Prom," is glimpsed in a party scene.
Answering questions about the film after the showing, writer, producer and director Zalutsky cited directors Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski as influences, "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Tenant" as films that particularly impressed him. ("Psycho" is another film that comes to mind when viewing this one.) Zalutsky said that he filmed "You Belong to Me" in Crown Heights, Fort Greene, and lower Manhattan.
In "In Twilight's Shadow," which bears the disclaimer that "no vampires were harmed" during the filming, Carlisle does battle with her rival, Aristotle, and one of his disciples, another powerful female vampire, for her mortal love, Sienna, whom he has taken.
