I caught up with Dallas Dubois’ every Tuesday late-night show, “Dallas Does the Palace,” on July 12. In spite of the steamy summer weather, young Dallas, in contrasting pink wig and glitzy green dress, danced up a storm, emoted, and generally generated energy aplenty. DJ Steve Havoc assisted.
Dallas offered a rousing music theater alto’s lament, “Give me a chance to sing melody,” and probed a more serious plight in “Stranger in My House.” To take our minds off the heat, Dallas delivered a naughty Christmas parody, “Santa’s Baby” (“He came down the chimney, then came—in me”), and went from there to a Whitney Houston ballad (“I didn’t know my own strength”) and a Rihanna number (“Hey, Mr. DJ”), which was DJ Steve’s request.
Dallas returned to Broadway melodies with a lively and expressive “Dance 10, Looks 3” (“Tits and Ass”), from “A Chorus Line,” and channeled Bette Midler for a dramatic “Rose’s Turn,” from “Gypsy.”
Dallas proffered political commentary on the Uganda Task Force Against Homosexuality’s scurrilous assertion that we eat “the pooh poohs” as she cleverly wove together Sherry Vine’s parody of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” “I Just Shit My Pants,” with homophobic Ugandan comments about fisting, and eating and playing with excrement, and a Wanda Sykes routine about finding a turd in the back seat of her car. A proud rendition of gay anthem “I Am What I Am,” from “La Cage aux Folles” was Dallas’ finale.
Catch Dallas Dubois’ solo show at the Ice Palace on Tuesdays at 11 p.m.
