Each year, familiar friends come from Ireland to Cherry Grove and the songs on Veda’s new EP “Transphibian” were written on and inspired by Fire Island, with electronic disco in mind. “Transphibian” gets you moving, grooving, dancing, and singing along with all four tracks. This great feel good album can definitely bring you up from the doldrums when you’re down. Veda’s EP is dedicated to Justin Vivian Bond and Justin Fashanu.
The first song, “I Want to Live,” echoing the title of Susan Hayward’s Oscar-winning 1958 film and featuring Gavin Friday, is full of energetic dance music and has inspiring lyrics about love and its effects on life, including “Your eyes do more than kill, I want to live!” and “I can’t live without you.”
The title song, “Transphibian,” is about the Fire Island drag queens and the water, from the Atlantic Ocean and the Great South Bay to the Ice Palace Pool, which surrounds us and them. The song starts off with a pulsating beat, which continues from start to finish, and puts me in mind of Logan Hardcore and the way she always stays in perpetual motion and keeps you transfixed. In “Transphibian,” the water calls you in, so get ready to swim. This song, too, has great catchy lyrics and its driving electronic beat will keep you singing and dancing along.
Supermarché,” featuring David Hoyle, Sparkle Motion AKA Paul Ryder, and Colin Foy, could be about the Grove Market, or even the Pines Pantry, and shows that love can await you anywhere, even in a supermarket, especially if you’re cruising the fruit aisle. According to this effervescent dance tune, you may go to out to the “supermarché” to shop for food and find that you come back with a life partner!
Last but not least, “Rojo Coca Cola,” featuring Caoimhe Derwin, has an upbeat beat, with a Latin twist. When the lovers kiss, our queen finds the taste of cola on his lips. The song and its fun lyrics truly take you right to the beach, while getting you moving and shaking.
In sum, “Transphibian” is a fine EP, with four wonderful dance hits to make you move and groove, whether you are on Fire Island, in Ireland, or somewhere else. So if you like ’80s-style music, like Depeche Mode and the Smiths, with a hint of Grace Jones, “Transphibian” is for you.
