Dear singer Porsche’s season at the Ice Palace, assisted by DJ Chuck McTague, was already in full swing when I caught up with her “Porsche Live” show on May 30.
Porsche opened lyrically with ABBA’s “Mamma Mia” and welcomed the warm weather, which just arrived, with a bouncy “Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,” by Leslie Gore. Our diva demonstrated her versatility by singing “Do you believe in love after love” in the growls of Cher, of course, and Eartha Kitt, as well as a breathy Marilyn Monroe, Brittany Spears, and Broadway icon Carol Channing, due here on August 24.
Porsche gave us a bit of Taylor Dayne doing “Tell It to My Heart,” which Dayne sang at Night of a Thousand Gowns, and in the same vein, of Anastasia singing “One day in your life.” “I want to dance with somebody … who loves me” was Porsche’s lively Whitney Houston tribute and, as Patsy Cline, she shared “I’ve got the lovesick blues,” upbeat despite the theme. As her twin Adele, Porsche “set fire to the rain,” which she followed with some mellow Ann Murray (“Even though we ain’t got money/I’m so in love with you, honey.”) Porsche and guest Spicky Hilton, who can be heard singing at the Blue Whale and the new Pavilion, when it opens, in Fire Island Pines, made sparks fly with “It’s Raining” (“No more tears”), with Spicky in the Barbra Streisand part and Porsche as Donna Summer.
Porsche became Shirley Bassey, rocking the Earth with “History Repeating,” this listener’s request, with a sincere “To Sir, with Love,” Lulu’s song, next up. As Barbra, Porsche sang a moody, torchy “My Man” to her heartthrob of the evening, Travis from the Pines. A plaintive “Silver Spring,” as Stevie Nicks, was next on the agenda.
Porsche took us back to the sensitive ’60s with the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreaming,” and as Janis Joplin, contrasted it with a no-holds-barred “Ball and Chain.” As Belinda Carlyle, for a change of pace, she declared, “We’ll make Heaven a place on Earth.” Porsche gave us “Sway with me” for a finale.
Across the way at Cherry’s, Robin Byrd and Lucas Entertainment’s second “Blow” night took place, featuring sexy porn actors fuzzy Tom Wolfe; Adam Killian, tattooed on the right arm and shoulder; and Vito Gallo, tattooed on the groin, strutting their considerable stuff. DJ Stacy was responsible for music.
