The 65th annual Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) Art Show took place at the historic Community House on August 3 and 4 and APCG Board Member Dennis McConkey coordinated the show valiantly in the face of his bereavement, the passing the day before of his partner David.
Homecoming Queen Shirley Shapiro cut the ribbon at the entrance to open the Art Show officially and awarded the Queen’s Choice prize ribbon to photographer Lorraine Michels’ picture of ducklings, “Rescuing Baby Quacks,” taken at Blueberry Hill at the end of May. APCG President Thom “Panzi” Hansen presented the President’s Choice ribbon to a work by Catherine Eckdahl, incorporating a photo of a Buddha in China and Chinese calligraphy, made in collaboration with a photojournalist friend.
Other artists exhibiting work were painters Esther Marie Chagaris from Sayville, John Mansueto, Larry Crawford from Texas, Sharon Way-Howard—“painter of bays, backwaters, marshes and the surrounding land,” Douglas Topper, Michael Fitzgerald, Michael Fisher, and Jack Dowling; Dennis McConkey, with paintings and pottery; Warren Boyd Wexler, with nature photography; Michael Abdis, with stained glass; and Kurt Gahan, with wire and crocheted jewelry.
