I caught up with Dallas Dubois’ weekly show, at the Ice Palace, on July 30, with DJ Chuck McTague on music, lights, and sound.
After letting us know what it takes to get to “The Big Time,” Dallas danced up a storm, assuring us, in a song from the film “Burlesque,” that “I am a good girl.” She breathed fresh life into a favorite Bette Midler song-and-comedy selection, “Pretty Legs and Great Big Knockers,” and later gave us a no-holds-barred “Rose’s Turn,” from “Gypsy,” Midler-style. Dallas talked about an engagement she had, working at a wake in drag, to lead into her wild “‘Crazy’ mix,” Patsy Cline’s “Crazy,” interrupted by movie scenes from the likes of “First Wives’ Club” and “Trick.” She remembered Whitney Houston, declaring, with intensity, “It’s not right, but it’s okay,” complete with split and high kicks.
Holly Dae put in a guest appearance, doing “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” from “Funny Girl,” with offbeat interpolations, to preview the “Distorted Broadway” show that she and Dallas and friends are presenting here on August 4.
Dallas returned for an energetic Beyoncé number and a JLo mash-up (“Jenny from the Block,” “Love to Make Love to You, Baby,” “Part-Time Lover”). To close, she asserted her pride with a song from “The Color Purple” (“I’m beautiful and I’m here”) and, dedicated to Fire Island and all of us, “I Am What I Am,” from “La Cage aux Folles.”
