Charity, Miss Fire Island 1968—the second and earliest living Miss Fire Island—was the featured performer on Cherry’s Dining with the Divas series on July 29 and invited several singers to share the spotlight with her. DJ Stacy was responsible for music.
Heralded by “A Pretty Girl Is like a Melody,” ‘lady in red’ Charity ushered in her show with “The Lady Is a Tramp,” promised us anything and everything in “Come on in My House,” and nurtured “A Growing Boy” no less suggestively.
Guest Ken Woodhouse, dressed to the nines, seduced us by singing “Mambo Italiano” and Desi Arnaz-as-Ricky Ricardo number “Babalu.”
Charity returned for a breezy and apt “Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries” and got even sweeter with “Candy,” a love song addressed by one woman to another.
Guest Johnny Pool remembered Louis Armstrong by singing “What a Wonderful Life.”
Charity followed “Tea for Two” with Kander and Ebb’s sugary ode to “Sara Lee” and took us back to the late 1960s with a dreamy “Yummy yummy yummy, I got love in my tummy.”
The last song I was able to stay for was Patty and Al’s duet, “I Keep Dancing on My Own,” with Al on guitar.
