Rounding off Miss Fire Island Weekend at the Ice Palace, on the night of September 8, was a benefit for the Concerned Women of the Grove, raising funds for breast cancer research and treatment, billed as the CWOG Follies, with many Cherry Grove performers participating and donating all of their tips to CWOG. Deputizing for Donna Piranha on short notice, Dallas Dubois hosted, and DJ Chuck McTague was responsible for music, lights and sound.
Dallas opened the show with a number that asked, “You want a little of this?” Gusty Winds gave us her odd and angry “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Whore D’oeuvre pouted, insisting, “It’s my time” and, packing her bags to leave, assured, “I hope you know that this has nothing to do with you.” Demi-Tasse, as Barbra Streisand, queried, “What did I have I don’t have now?” from “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever.” Bella’s number was an enthusiastic “It’s Today,” from “Mame.” Nikki Starr, as Cher, offered “If I Could Turn Back Time.”
Brandon Cutrell sang “I Wish I Could Go Back to College,” from “Avenue Q,” and joined Susan Campanaro/Lavinia Draper in singing the hell out of “Suddenly Seymour,” from “Little Shop of Horrors.” Susan’s country number insisted, “If you want an all day always woman, you gotta be an alright all night man.” In a Tammy Wynette doubleheader, Porsche sang “Your good girl’s gonna go bad” and Tish, as Brother Boy, from “Sordid Lives,” as Tammy, performed “Stand By Your Man.” Tickets were drawn for the 50-50 raffle, in which Emma won $270 and she and Leslie donated all of it back to CWOG.
Renée Flaming interspersed “Good Morning, Baltimore,” from “Hairspray,” with raucously pertinent dialogue. Freddy Christian and the Davenports came costumed as “Rocky Horror” characters for “Sweet Transvestite” and “The Time Warp.” Gassy Winds contributed a flatulent “One Moment in Time.” Ken Woodhouse sang ruefully of “The Summer Wind.” Dallas interpolated Tourette syndrome outbursts into a sweet “Home,” from “The Wiz.” And Viva Sexx concluded the benefit with “Last Dance.”
