George Oakley, of Oakley Brothers Home Improvements, passed away suddenly on May 25. George had received Cherry Grove Community Honors from the Cherry Grove Community Association, Inc. (CGCAI) on August 14, 2010. On that occasion, CGCAI’s Audrey Hartmann described his “taking care of the community;” called him “very well read, very articulate, and very handsome;” and, noting his readiness to assist when beloved thespian Maggie McCorkle passed away five years ago, added, “He is compassionate and he believes strongly in our community and the Community House.” George had said of the Grove, “It’s been my life here for many years as a builder,” and pointed out, “My family has been here for decades.” He called the Grove “one of a kind. It’s the most beautiful place in the world.” At a Memorial Day service, at the Community House on May 26, Arts Project of Cherry Grove President Thom “Panzi” Hansen said of George, “We shall remember how he loved Cherry Grove as much as we did.”
