Favorite Fire Island diva Porsche began her 13th season here, on May 9, with a show, which was a combination Cherry Grove family reunion and revival meeting, to kick off summer 2014 at the Ice Palace. DJ Chuck McTague assisted. Porsche welcomed us with zesty opening songs “River Deep, Mountain High” and the Beatles’ “Baby, You Can Drive My Car,” which were followed by “History Repeating,” as Shirley Bassey, and doo-wop number “Be My Baby.”
Next came interludes by Holly Dae, contributing “Someone Like You,” “You Oughta Know,” and more and, later, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” and “It’s Cold in Here,” and Logan Hardcore, doing Beyoncé, hanging from the rafters, and executing splits and high kicks.
Porsche rejoined us with “(I want to put on my) Boogie Shoes” and, as Bette Midler, “Under the Boardwalk,” to herald summer at the beach. “It’s in His Kiss (the Shoop Shoop Song),” as Cher, and Donna Summer’s “Bad Girls,” performed as Carol Channing and Karen Walker (Megan Mullally) might do it. Porsche serenaded her “fake boyfriend” Ted with “I’ll Never Love this Way Again.” “The Best Thing about Being a Woman,” Patsy Cline’s “Crazy,” Britney Spears’ “Oops, I Did it Again,” “Come on in My House” in Japanese, Eartha Kitt-style, “Redneck Woman,” and “Wig in a Box,” from “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” completed this first night.
