Fire broke out in and destroyed Hernando’s Hideaway, the home of Fidel Patino and Jean-Pierre Lemarié, on Bayview Walk at about 2:30 a.m. on June 16 and, in addition to the Cherry Grove Fire Department, departments from other communities on Fire Island and from Long Island, as well as EMS, responded to the alarms.
The raging fire, which also damaged neighboring homes the Green House, belonging to Ken Woodhouse and Mike Turci, and Clyde Oakley’s house, was extinguished sometime after 3 a.m. Until then, glowing embers rained over nearby walks.
All people who were in Hernando’s Hideaway and the neighboring houses were successfully evacuated, although Fidel sustained a broken leg, but, of his and Jean-Pierre’s pet poodles Mona Lisa and Prince, only Mona Lisa survived, Grove firefighters Joan Van Ness and Lorraine Michels reported later that morning. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed at this time.
