Cherry’s and Stonewall Inn bartender Johnny Pool, who, in his own words, has spent the past “50 years behind bars on Fire Island,” returned to the Ice Palace—where he had spent the first 35 of those years and which he had not entered in the last 15—on June 15 for a toast and roast, jointly planned by the Palace and Cherry’s. Porsche was the host, assisted by DJ Chuck, and special guests, in addition to Johnny, escorted in by Cherry’s co-owner Jacqué Piazza, were Charity and Robin Byrd. Porsche sang “Hello, Dolly” with Johnny, who also sang “What a Wonderful World.” Charity did Momma Morton’s song, from “Chicago,” and other numbers. She and Robin offered reminiscences. Other old friends present were original Cherry’s owners Lois McIntosh and Meryl Facterman, Stonewall bartender Tree, Bobby Scherffius and Victor Alfieri, and China.
