Cherry’s on the Bay has a long tradition of hot live music on hot summer afternoons and Saturday afternoon, July 19, offered a special treat when Grove resident Sue Cialini-King brought her rock trio Triage to the stage.
Triage consists of Tobie Dean on bass/vocals, Ann Mounty on vocals, and Sue on guitar and vocals and they play together like they were born to it. Ann is a chanteuse extraordinaire and, whether she’s covering Chryssie Hind or Janis Joplin, she’s got the chops. Her voice resonates everywhere you want it to and she held the Cherry’s crowd in the palm of her hand. Tobie’s husky R&B style made for a delicious contrast and Sue knows how to rock it out, singing and switching among acoustic and electric guitars.
The set list ranged through more than five decades from Lulu’s “To Sir with Love” through “Signs,” originally by Five Man Electrical Band, to Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, Lady Gaga, and Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally.” Each of the sets had such range and depth that everyone was on the dance floor and many in the crowd were singing along with the band and playing air guitar on some of the riffs.
The gray Saturday afternoon became psychedelic with the swirl of colors on the dancers and it’s clear that Triage will be back next year. This was their first Cherry Grove gig and it won’t be their last!
