On August 6, in the 30th anniversary Cherry Bowl Volleyball Tournament, women and men of the Grovettes, the Cherry Grove team, broke a two-year losing streak and, for the first time since 2011, bested the Copettes, made up of men and women from the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau. With DJ Chuck McTague calling the games for the first time, Grovettes won the initial game, 25 to 19, and Copettes won the second, 25 to 14, but Grovettes proved victorious in the deciding game, 25 to 20, and in the tournament.
Entertainment was by Porsche, singing the “Star Spangled Banner” to begin the afternoon and, at halftime, with the other cheerleading Cherry Tarts, “Mickey”—during which they relieved some of the Copettes of their shirts—and by the men and woman of the Suffolk County Police Emerald Society Pipes & Drums corps, playing “God Bless America,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” and “Amazing Grace.”
Doreen Rallo was the referee and Dale, the scorekeeper. Among the Grovettes was Mark Atten, who played in the first games in 1984.
