On June 18, LGBT Pride Day in Cherry Grove, photographer Susan Kravitz celebrated the publication of her new book, “Mascara, Mirth & Mayhem: Independence Day on Fire Island,” vividly chronicling 30 years of Fourth of July Grove Invasions of the Pines, Grove Homecoming Queens, and their cross-dressing, sometimes leather subjects, first in black-and-white, then later in color. The party took place on Green Walk, at the ocean, and S.H.K. Catering Services was responsible for refreshments. Retailing for $75, and consisting of 145 pages of photos, historic and recent, essays, and interviews with some of those whom Kravitz photographed, “Mascara, Mirth & Mayhem” will be available at FIG (Fire Island Goods), in downtown Cherry Grove, and Summer Solstice, on the harbor in Fire Island Pines.
