n July 23, Sam Green and Chris Lacovara hosted God’s Love We Deliver’s (GLWD) cocktail party, in the beautiful garden Blueberry Hill, to express appreciation to Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove donors for more three decades of support. Thanks to its 10,000 volunteers, GLWD prepares and delivers nutritious meals to homebound people with AIDS/HIV and other serious illnesses, as well as to their families, and offers additional critical assistance.
GLWD CEO Karen Pearl declared that, with the organization’s new headquarters, at 166 Avenue of the Americas in Soho, “We will never turn anyone with HIV away.” She explained, “We do meals, but what we actually do is meals plus … We bring hope and dignity and lots of love to people who need it.”
Belvedere Guest House proprietor Craig Eberhardt and singer and Fire Island News columnist Bob “Rose” Levine, who organized the first Grove and Pines benefits for GLWD, also spoke. With the late John Eberhardt, the former hosted a Toga Tea at the guesthouse in 1993, and the latter gave a show, “Anything Rose,” with late pianist Jerry Scott, at the Botel in 1988. “I did the first [Fire Island] benefit for God’s Love We Deliver,” Bob said. He also performed early benefit shows for Gay Men’s Health Crisis and People with AIDS Coalition. Posters advertising the 1993 and 1988 fundraisers were on display.
Members of the Imperial Court of New York, officers of community associations, and other notables were present, enjoying the tasty hors d’oeuvres, emerging nonstop from the kitchen; the open bar; and the rarified surroundings.
