In the annual Cherry Bowl Tournament, the volleyball games, held on August 2 in Cherry Grove, the home team, the Grovettes, captained by Sue Panzer, and assisted by coach Andy Porzio, retook their championship title, after a loss last year, and once more beat the Copettes, the Suffolk County Marine Bureau Police team, led by Captain Chris Morris. The Grovettes won the first game, 25 to 15; the Copettes took the second, 25 to 8; but the Grovettes proved victorious in the deciding game, 25 to 18. Doreen Rallo was the referee and Chuck McTague was caller and DJ. Mark Atten, who participated in the original 1984 games, played for the Grovettes once again.
The colorful Suffolk County Police Emerald Society Pipe and Drum Corps, present in full force in their kilts, marched to the volleyball court, playing “God Bless America,” “Over There,” and “When the Saints Go Marching In,” and between games two and three, gave us a solemn “Amazing Grace.” Porsche sang the “Star Spangled Banner,” just before the games began, and, later sang “Mickey,” while Lavinia Draper, of the Cherry Tarts cheerleaders, topped a human pyramid of Copettes fans.
