Babirye Leilah Burns, activist and sculptor from Uganda, who participated in the Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR) in 2015, won asylum in the United States on February 14. She posted the following on her Facebook page:
“Through my lawyer Christina Rosalin Peña I just won my Asylum case. Thank you AVP [Anti-Violence Project] [for] so much work. I have a lot of people to thank: you Junique Wambya for your support letter; Victor Mukasa for your support, brother; Sam Gordon, Jacob Robichaux, Chris Bogia [of FIAR], Joseph Saporito and Bruce-Michael, for now, and speechless. Happy Valentine’s Day Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera, Beyonce Amooti Karungi, Melanie Nathan, Hunter Reynolds, love you all, and [thank for] your support.”
Babirye Leilah began her quest for asylum in 2015, when she first came to the United States as a participant in that summer’s FIAR. Fire Island Q News heartily congratulates her on achieving this goal and welcomes her to her home here.
