The Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) ended the summer’s platinum or 70th anniversary celebration of its 1948 founding with a gala Platinum Prom, at the historic Community House on September 22, and the event drew attendees in their best senior prom attire, chaperones secular and religious, and dueling Carrie Whites, from Stephen King’s “Carrie.” Dance music that got us moving was by Lady DJ and hors d’oeuvres were by Island Breeze restaurant, which also supplied waiters and bartenders.
The climax of the gala, organized by the APCG Board, was a costume contest and our chaperones won some of the top prizes. Deemed Best Individual was Demi-Tasse as dour chaperone Miriam Gootenberg, telling us if skirts were too short. Best Couple was Toni Cesta and Jane Haber as a frightful Carrie and her date. And the Best Group, ensuring that we kept a respectable distance apart, was the quartet of nuns and priests Doris Dear and Jim Darling, Matthew George and Michael Moran.
Then it was time to select our monarchs, and out all the contenders, the assembled voted Monika Kost and Denise Samid as King and Queen of our prom.
