During the summer of 2018, the artists of the annual Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR) in Cherry Grove, coordinated by Founder Chris Bogia and past resident Jesse Harrod, were Leeanne Maxey, Kiarash K, Anna Campbell, Montgomery Perry Smith, and José Joaquín Figueroa.
On May 3, three of the artists came to display their work in New York City, at the LGBTQ Community Center’s second floor Bureau of General Services: Queer Division, in an exhibition billed as “Welcome to Cherry Grove: Works from the 2018 Fire Island Artist Residency.” Showing work that they created in the Grove, Leeann, from Brooklyn, brought her paintings in egg tempera and watercolor; Monty, also from Brooklyn, brought mixed media sculptures, entitled “Fleshlights,” cylinders that opened to reveal artistic elements inside; and José, from Venezuela and Oakland CA, displayed drawings, paintings, and mixed media depictions of the beach, pools, and other Fire Island scenes.
