In the annual Cherry Bowl Tournament, the volleyball games, on August 7, Cherry Grove’s Grovettes once again bested the Suffolk County Copettes, the police team, winning two games to the Copettes’ one. DJ Chuck McTague was responsible for music and sound and for calling the games. The Cherry Bowl was co-sponsored by Embroidery, in Bay Shore, Long Island, and the Grove Hotel/Ice Palace.
The Suffolk County Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums led the entrance parade, followed by the Copettes and Grovettes. Singer Porsche, who led the Cherry Tarts cheerleaders, sang the “Star Spangled Banner” to kick off the games.
The Grovettes won the first game, 25 to 19; the Copettes won the second, 25 to 13; and the Grovettes won the deciding game, 25 to 15. Mark Atten, who played in the first games in 1984, served first in this year’s second game.
Between the first and second games, Porsche sang “Hey, Mickey,” which became “Hey, Cody,” when the Cherry Tarts captured a young man. Between games two and three, the Emerald Society played songs including “When the Caissons Go Rolling Along,” the Battle Hymn of the Republic, and a solemn “Amazing Grace.” Between these games, Porsche sang “Vacation” and the Cherry Tarts caught a retired officer and formed a pyramid.
