Sabel Scities, the lovely and glamorous Miss Fire Island 2010, has returned to us from Austin TX and is performing “The Sabel Show” at Cherry’s on Saturdays at 6 p.m. I caught her August 29 performance, with DJ Justin assisting.
Sabel sang us a sultry “Black and Gold (’cause if you’re not really here, then the stars don’t even matter),” Sam Sparro’s song. She favored us with Tracy Chapman’s “(You got a) Fast Car (beep beep),” with the audience responsible for the “beep beep”s. She sang Kermit the Frog’s “Rainbow Connection,” some of it, nevertheless melodious, in her take on Kermit’s voice. Sabel’s appealing, jazzy “Walking in Memphis” followed and she took us deep into country with her invitation to “Be My Baby Tonight.”
Sabel paid loving and evocative tribute to Whitney Houston with a medley of “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “I’m Every Woman,” and “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay.” She brought Wendy Ho to mind with “You Can Fuck Me,” Ho’s answer to “Be There,” and “Not Tonight in My Ass,” Ho’s version of “On the Disco Line.” A Lindsay Lohan monologue and song, as well as “Sweet Dreams (are made of this)” and “River Deep, Mountain High” were also among the generous selection of songs that Sabel shared with us.
