Cherry's bartenders Mike Salinari and Rich Parisi organized We Care, a successful and enjoyable benefit for Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC), New York City's more than a quarter-of-a-century-old AIDS services organization, on July 19, and approximately $3,100 was raised at the afternoon event.
There was a silent auction of gift certificates, gift baskets, brunches and dinners, cosmetics, erotic DVDs, and leather, with Cherry Lane Café, East of Eighth, Estee Lauder and Mac Cosmetics, Furci's, Garden Grove, Homo Depot, Jumping Jack's Seafood Shack, Lips, the Cubby Hole, the Grove Hotel, Savyville Ferry, and Stonewall Inn among the donors, as well as a further auction of Marc Jacobs purses and a Chanel necklace.
A show, with Rich as MC, was the centerpiece of the benefit, and Heaven served as DJ.
Panzi offered a pointed parody of "The Girl from Ipanema," entitled "The Gal with Emphysema (goes smoking)," and romped through an absolutely filthy number, "I'm a country girl," to the melody, from Rossini's "William Tell" overture, also known as the "Lone Ranger" theme. Philomena limned the very versatile, very much in demand "Lady in 29 Palms" and, in comic response to Edith Piaf's brave "Je ne regrette rien," declared, "I regret everything!"
Sensational singer Jackie Dupree segued from "Carwash" into "You made me feel mighty real" and from "I want to dance with somebody, with somebody to love me" into "Last dance, last chance for love." Plaintively singing "All by myself," Spickie Hilton brought down the house, mid-song, with an amazing sustained note.
Singer Ken Woodhouse reprised his dramatic showstopper, Billy Bigelow's "Carousel" "Soliloquy," from Arts Project show "Hollywood Bound." Dan Schlageter suavely sang of "Two sweethearts and the summer wind."
Nikki Starr was Cher, performing "Half Breed," sporting an elaborate feather headdress, and "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves," "Dark Lady," and "The Way of Love." Demi-Tasse, in country mode, insisted, "I never promised you a rose garden." Gusty Winds delivered a riotous monologue from "Designing Women" ("And that ... is the night the lights went out in Georgia!")
Ray, from Grove Manor, won $600 in a 50-50 raffle and donated $150 of it back for GMHC.
