Fire Island Dance Festival 15: A $246,000 Artistic Triumph

Every summer since 1995, Fire Island has provided Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the opportunity to create a world-class dance festival in the paradise that is Fire Island.
FIDF 15 featured stars of internationally acclaimed and emerging dance companies, performing outdoors in Fire Island Pines, on a stage specially built and illuminated, against the breathtaking backdrop of the Great South Bay. Jon Biondo, Tim Horman and Ryan Coutu graciously opened their landmark bayfront home and grounds for a trio of spectacular party/performances emceed by television’s Bruce Vilanch.
Performers included Armitage Gone! Dance; Mary Carmen Catoya and Rolando Sarabia, Miami City Ballet principals; Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet; Complexions Contemporary Ballet; Feliciano Dance Company; a Piece d'Occasion by Christopher Huggins; Keigwin+Company; Jodi Melnick; DRA Rising Star Kamilah Shah; Danny Tidwell; and Zvi Dance.
DRA Founding Director Denise Roberts Hurlin truly believes that it is the Fire Island community – a hard-working benefit committee, supportive business people, ever-enthusiastic residents -- that made FIDF 15 such a spectacular success. Despite the challenging economic climate, the event raised $246,000, bringing the Fire Island Dance Festival’s 15-year total to $1.95 million.
